In a rather aggressive semi-final encounter between Mongsenbai and Lijaba Lijen, match referee Perong issued 4 yellows at a hostile Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung on day 8 of the 3rd Inter-ward football tournament organized by Marepkong Youth Association.
Mongsenbai’s star striker Shiponglepba scored the lone goal of the match, establishing coach Marlemba’s team as strong championship title contenders.
Mongsenbai had to dig deep after the first half to an assault of relentless pressure from a fighting Lijaba Lijen side with Arenungsang, Sungtilong and Akumsangba troubling the defensive back on multiple occasions. Mongsenbai, on the other hand, remained strong and composed despite the flurry of attempts by the Lijaba Lijen forwards.
Ashish (63) and Toshinungsang (70) from Mongsenbai side and Supongtoshi (60) and Tekarenba (84) from Lijaba Lijen were shown the yellow card for foul play in the second half of the high octane match.
Lijaba Lijens veteran goalie Nungsangyanger also made some spectacular saves during the game, but couldn’t stop Shiponglepba’s winner that came in the 55th minute.
The Final match of the tournament will be played on Saturday after a brief closing ceremony program which will be graced by Mangla Imchen, District Sports Officer, Mokokchung at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex at 1:00 PM.
