Senior officials from the district administrations of Karbi Anglong, Assam, and Dimapur, Nagaland, held a coordination meeting at the Circuit House in Dimapur on Thursday, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and strengthening coordination along the Assam–Nagaland border.
The Assam delegation was led by Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner Aranyak Saikia, IAS, along with senior civil and police officials, while the Dimapur district administration represented Nagaland.
The meeting emphasised the need for continuous communication between the district administrations and police of both states to ensure that any emerging issues along the border are addressed promptly and peacefully.
Officials from both sides acknowledged the cordial relationship between the two administrations and appreciated the timely response of the Assam and Nagaland Police in handling incidents along the border, noting that such cooperation has helped prevent disputes from escalating and ensured the safety of residents.
During the meeting, revenue officials from Assam presented the historical and administrative background of the disputed areas, citing district boundary notifications, revenue records and census documents. They maintained that the villages in question have long been part of Assam’s notified administrative jurisdiction and have been included in electoral rolls and census operations for several decades.
Despite their differing claims, both sides agreed that maintaining peace on the ground remains the immediate priority. Officials stressed that regular meetings, people-to-people contact and mutual trust are essential to preventing misunderstandings and resolving local issues before they escalate.
As part of confidence-building measures, the meeting proposed the formation of a joint border monitoring committee comprising district officials, police personnel and representatives from the concerned border villages. The proposed committee would jointly monitor developments, respond to incidents and facilitate dialogue between affected communities while maintaining the existing status quo until the border dispute is resolved by the appropriate authorities.
Both sides also agreed that future visits to sensitive border areas should, as far as possible, be conducted jointly by officials and police from both states to promote transparency and avoid misunderstandings.
The meeting concluded with both administrations reaffirming their commitment to sustained dialogue, coordinated action and peaceful coexistence, while agreeing that regular communication and mutual cooperation remain key to preserving harmony along the Assam–Nagaland border.
