The Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has notified 34 fisheries clusters across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to strengthen the fisheries and aquaculture sector through a cluster based approach.

PMMSY has been implemented since the financial year 2020–21 with an estimated investment of Rs 20,750 crore for the holistic development of the fisheries sector. The cluster approach aims to improve competitiveness, address critical gaps in the fisheries value chain, encourage private sector participation and enable efficient use of financial resources.

The Department said the notified clusters are intended to generate higher incomes, achieve economies of scale and support organized growth of fisheries and aquaculture. State wise and location wise details of the clusters have been identified based on regional strengths and sectoral potential.

The government is also implementing complementary initiatives including the Blue Revolution scheme, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund, and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah Yojana to support infrastructure, formalization and value chain efficiency. The Kisan Credit Card facility has also been extended to fishers and fish farmers.

The information was shared by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
