CNCCI announces indefinite shutdown across Nagaland over ULB nomination issue; Government invites CNCCI for talks

The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has declared an “Indefinite Voluntary Business Shutter Down” across Nagaland starting April 24, 2025. This action is a direct response to what the CNCCI describes as “step-motherly treatment” in the nomination process of District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) representatives to the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

The decision to initiate the shutdown comes after the state government allegedly failed to address repeated appeals from the CNCCI. Despite a formal letter to the Chief Minister and a press statement issued earlier in April, warning of democratic protests if justice was not served by April 20, the CNCCI claims the government has remained unresponsive.

“The CNCCI has exhausted all possible means,” the organization stated, explaining that the shutdown was called after consultations with nine aggrieved District CCIs.

The protest will also include banking institutions, though medical services, petrol pumps, and taxi services will be exempt from the shutdown during the first phase. It is expected that vehicular movement, educational institutions, and government offices will operate normally during this phase.

“This protest is entirely voluntary. We request all District Chambers to ensure it remains peaceful and free of any untoward incidents,” CNCCI emphasized.

In response to the shutdown announcement, the Government of Nagaland’s Municipal Affairs Department has invited the CNCCI for a meeting with the Commissioner & Secretary of the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department. The meeting, scheduled for April 23 at 12:00 PM, is aimed at discussing the concerns raised in a letter dated April 9, 2025.

Additionally, an Executive Council Meeting of the CNCCI will take place on April 25, during which members will deliberate on the next phase of the protest. All District CCI presidents are expected to participate in outlining the future course of action.
