Mokokchung, 20 June (MTNews): In a significant development in Nagaland’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking, the Mokokchung Police apprehended five individuals during a routine vehicle checking operation at the IOC Sungkomen Ward on Monday, June 19, 2023. The accused persons, identified as Imotongdang, Impojong, Akumsashi, Moazulu, and Moakumzuk, were found to be in possession of suspected Brown Sugar/Heroin.
This arrest comes as Nagaland declared ‘War on Drugs,’ prompting the state police to intensify efforts to curb the illicit drug trade. The Mokokchung Police have been proactive in arresting drug traffickers and individuals in possession of narcotics. From May 2022 to May 2023, a total of 12 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Mokokchung alone, with 16 individuals arrested. Additionally, in June 2023, including the present case, two more cases have been registered.
According to a report from the Mokokchung Police, the seized contraband (May 2022 to May 2023) included 128.39 grams of Brown Sugar, 651 Spasmo Proxyvon Capsules, 55 Spamonil tablets, 94 Alprazolam tablets, and 129 Buprenorphine Sublingual tablets. These quantities highlight the magnitude of the illegal drug trade in the region.
In 2018, a total of 10 cases were registered under the NDPS Act, followed by 6 cases in 2019, 14 cases in 2020, and 10 cases in 2021.
According to Aien Amri, who has been a counselor in Drug-resistant Tuberculosis (DRTB), Mokokchung for the past four years, the number of drug abusers in Mokokchung has been increasing. She also pointed out that the majority of the clients she encounters are between the ages of 28 and 35 years. However, she also noted that there are many teenagers who are not caught by the police.
“Teenagers often get into the cycle because of peer pressure. The influence from friends is so strong,” she added.
She further said that most of the clients she has encountered are often depressed with their family and life while some feel alienated because they are not accepted by the family or society.
“They are mostly filled with anxiety, psychosis, mood swings, suicidal tendency and so on,” she added.
Meanwhile, Dr Viketoulie Pienyü, associated with the State Mental Health Institute, Kohima, in 2022, also shed light on the link between substance abuse and mental health issues. He stated that approximately 20% of reported mental illness cases in Nagaland are associated with substance abuse, indicating the dire consequences of drug addiction on individuals’ well-being.
Therefore, the Mokokchung Police’s swift action serves as a reminder of the need for collective determination to combat drug trade and its adverse effects on society.
Meanwhile, talking to Mokokchung Times, an addict in recovery said, “I hope that the society will do away with their preconceived notions about addiction and instead focus on learning more about ‘addiction as a brain disorder’ and not stigmatize it or discriminate against the addicts.”
