First inter-department table tennis tournament begins in Kohima

The first Inter-Department Table Tennis Tournament, organised by the NIAPA Khelo India Centre in collaboration with the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Nagaland, began at the Indoor Stadium, Officers’ Hill, Kohima, on Friday. The two-day tournament features team and singles events involving 21 government departments.

MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, the guest of honour, said the table between players could serve as a bridge for better coordination and understanding among government departments. Drawing parallels with the sport, he highlighted the importance of quick decision-making and adaptability in public service.

NIAPA Managing Director Akuonuo Khezhie Yhome said the tournament aims to promote table tennis, provide competitive exposure and create opportunities for sportspersons. She highlighted the NIAPA Northeast Open Table Tennis Championship, which has completed five editions since 2021.

The tournament allows each participating department to include one state- or national-level player, while the team event follows a league-cum-knockout format. The winners will receive Rs 20,000, with prizes of Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 for the second, third and fourth positions respectively.

Joint Secretary, Youth Resources and Sports, Tiameren Chang, said the event would enable government employees to interact, exchange experiences and strengthen sportsmanship, fitness and discipline. Sporting legend Kezhaleü Keretsü was also honoured during the inaugural programme. (With DIPR inputs)
