During the Nagaland Health Project’s culmination program, Mopungchuket Health & Wellness Center Committees (HWC), Chungtia Village Health Committee (VHC), and Mongsenyimti Primary Health Center Committee (PHC) were recognized as the district’s Best Performing Committees.
Certificates and cash awards were given to the Best Performing Committees of the three Centres – CHC/PHC/VHC/Sub-Centres from each of the 11 districts, excluding the newly created districts of Noklak, Tseminyu, Niuland, Chumukedima, and Shamator.
According to Lanuakum, Field Demonstrator, DPMU Mokokchung, the Nagaland Health Project (NHP) saw “enhanced visibility and proactive role of women in Health Committees across 34 sites as an outcome of institutionalizing female Co-chair in every Committee” in Mokokchung.
Speaking on the outcomes of the NHP over a five-year period, he stated that incentivization in the form of food supplements to expectant mothers and ASHA yielded positive results.
“At the CHC level, capturing 4 Antenatal cares (ANC) was always an issue because Tuli, Mangkolemba, and Changtongya have migrant populations,” he said, adding that Behavioral Change Campaigns yielded positive results.
Speaking on the empowerment of Village Health Committees, he stated that with various capacity building and handholding support provided by NHP, the VHC played a key role in decision making not only for health issues but also for overall village development.
He also added that with the funds at their disposal, patients were provided with free medicines, free lab services and also screening of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD).
“The added and upgraded equipment boosted the confidence of the health personnel which consequently gave better patient care and diagnostic services,” he said, citing the increase in institutional delivery as a success story which he credited to up-gradation of the Labor Rooms.
He further mentioned that the major portion of their Result Based Financing (RBF) incentive was invested in the renovation of the Health Centers like construction of retaining wall, fencing, gates, tiling, drainage system, toilets and extension of rooms amongst many other activities.
He mentioned that many Health Committees started taking up livelihood projects as a way to sustain the financial position of the Committees.
Plantation of betel nut seedlings at Longjemdang village, purchase of printer at Atuphu village, Marketing Shed at Liroyimti Village and piggery at Luyong are some of the livelihood projects to generate income for the Committee, he said.
He later referred to Mongsenyimti PHC’s achievement of NQAS Certification in 2022 as one of NHP’s success stories.
“Over the course of five years NHP intervened sites have consistently achieved the KAYAKALP Award. Changtongya CHC, Tuli CHC, Merangkong PHC, Mongsenyimti PHC, Chuchuyimlang PHC, Longmisa H&WC, Yaongyimsem H&WC, Sungratsu H&WC and Mopungchuket H&WC are some of the Centres awarded with KAYAKALP Award,” he added.
