The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has announced the nomination of Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the new Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), effective immediately. The nomination was made by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, and was officially published in the Gazette on November 12, 2024.
Justice Surya Kant takes over the position from Justice BR Gavai, who has recently been appointed as the Executive Chairman of NALSA.
The SCLSC is instrumental in promoting access to justice, particularly for marginalized and underprivileged sections of society who may face financial or social challenges in approaching the Supreme Court.
