Following the killing of a youth at Tizit village in Mon district, the Konyak Union (KU) has strongly condemned the incident and called for an urgent summit of Naga political groups to arrest what it described as a growing slide into violence in Eastern Nagaland.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, the KU condemned the killing of Manwang Leipha, son of Khangnyei of Longphaoh village, terming it a blatant violation of the December 18, 2007 Tuensang summit resolution, which declared the entire eastern jurisdiction a “peace zone.”
The resolution, reaffirmed by the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) and the Eastern Naga National Workers’ Forum (ENNWF), strictly prohibits bloodshed, intimidation and all forms of violence.
Expressing grief and outrage, the union extended condolences to the bereaved family and described the killing as a “cruel and deliberate act” that undermines the fragile trust built over decades of peace efforts in the region.
Warning that it would no longer tolerate such incidents, the KU stated that continued violations of the peace zone resolution would compel it to impose non-cooperation against any individual or group found involved in violence.
The union further informed that its Union Executive Council (UEC) and advisory board, in a recent meeting, deliberated on convening an ‘All Konyak Naga Political Groups Summit,’ tentatively proposed to be held in Mon town. The summit, it said, will focus on advocacy, strengthening unity among factions and fostering reconciliation for peace and development in Eastern Nagaland.
The KU also appealed for cooperation from all stakeholders, including Naga political groups and Indian security agencies, stressing the need for collective responsibility to uphold peace.
