Manipur emerges as Overall Champion in thrilling conclusion to 3rd North East Games 2024

The 3rd North East Games 2024 came to a riveting conclusion on Saturday with Manipur emerging as the overall champion, securing their status as the powerhouse of northeastern sports. With a remarkable total of 130 medals, including 52 Gold, 38 Silver, and 40 Bronze, Manipur’s athletes showcased unparalleled skill and determination, cementing their legacy as the champions of the previous two North East Games and the undeniable victors of the 3rd edition.

Nagaland, with an impressive performance throughout the event, fought valiantly to claim the 1st runner-up position in the medal tally, securing a total of 134 medals. With 48 Gold, 42 Silver, and 44 Bronze medals, Nagaland’s ascent from the top 5 in previous games to the top 2 in the 3rd North East Games reflects the remarkable growth of sports in the state.

Meanwhile, Assam displayed commendable resilience and skill, securing the 3rd position with a total of 139 medals. With 43 Gold, 44 Silver, and 52 Bronze medals, Assam’s journey to the top spot was intense until the very last game, demonstrating the competitive spirit and dedication of their athletes.

In addition to the medal tally, special recognition was awarded to outstanding individuals and states for their exemplary contributions to the games:

The Fair Play Award was presented to Sikkim for demonstrating the highest standards of sportsmanship and fair play throughout the event.

The Spirit of Olympic Award was bestowed upon Tripura for embodying the values of sportsmanship, unity, and excellence.

The Outstanding Sportsman Award was earned by Mr Venuzo Dawhuo of Nagaland, who made history by winning gold medals in two different sports disciplines. Dawhuo clinched gold in shot put and discus throw in athletics, and also secured the gold medal in belt wrestling in the 100+ category.

The Outstanding Sportswoman Award was bestowed upon Ms Tsuchoi T of Nagaland, who showcased exceptional athleticism and versatility by winning four gold medals in athletics, including the 5000 meters, mixed rally, and women’s cross-country team events. Additionally, Tsuchoi T secured two silver medals in the women’s cross-country and 4×4 100 rally events.
