Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), has issued a clarification dismissing claims regarding compensation for properties affected by the proposed Foothills Road as “baseless and misleading.”
The clarification comes amid growing concerns on social media over the No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by 14 tribal Hohos, with some sections demanding that it be declared null and void.
Addressing the issue, Jamir stated that reports suggesting compensation for fully damaged properties would only be provided after approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways are inaccurate.
The proposed Foothills Road, envisaged as part of a Trans-Nagaland Highway, is a key infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic growth in the state. The Government of Nagaland has already submitted Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to the Centre, seeking its upgradation to a National Highway at an estimated cost of Rs 3,284 crore.
Jamir called on the State Government and concerned departments to take proactive steps to restore confidence among stakeholders, including tribal Hohos, Foothills Committee members, and affected landowners.
He stressed the need for constructive dialogue and consensus-building, stating that bridging gaps between the State Government, the Centre, and landowners would be crucial for the successful implementation of the project.
