Meluri
The Department of Geology & Mining, Nagaland, is aggressively expanding its exploration of the state’s key minerals, focusing on coal, nickel, cobalt-bearing iron ore, and limestone.
Under the coal sector, regional exploration is underway in two blocks in Mokokchung district. The department also plans to undertake detailed exploration of strategic minerals, including nickel and cobalt-bearing iron ore deposits, in the Pokphur block of Kiphire district, as well as G3-level exploration in the Mollen block of Meluri district.
In addition, G3 exploration of limestone resources is being conducted in Mimi, Khongka, and Hakumute, all located in Kiphire district.
To support these efforts, the Department of Geology & Mining has bolstered its chemical laboratory by installing a Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WD-XRF) facility for multi-elemental analysis of minerals, rocks, and soil.
Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, shared these developments during the 6th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, which commenced on March 3, 2025, at the Assembly Hall in Kohima.
Additionally, the department continues to work on resolving pending issues concerning the exploration and exploitation of petroleum oil and natural gas in the Disputed Area Belt (DAB) with the Government of Assam, as well as with the Central Government for the rest of the state.
