A delegation from the Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR), led by Chairman Alun Hangsing, participated in the two-day Northeast Regional Convention of the State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights held in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, on July 31 and August 1.
The delegation included members Akumla Longchari and Aying Wangsha, along with consultant Lichani Murry. Hosted by the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, the convention was held under the theme, “Strengthening Child Rights Protection in Northeast India through Regional Cooperation and Collaborative Action.”
The convention brought together representatives from SCPCRs across the Northeast to deliberate on issues including implementation of the POCSO Act, juvenile justice, education, child trafficking, cyber safety, missing children and strengthening child protection mechanisms, while also sharing best practices.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu called for stronger regional cooperation to address cross-border child protection challenges and proposed that the convention be held annually on a rotational basis. On the second day, NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo said the recommendations would help shape child rights policies for decades.
The convention concluded with the adoption of the Tawang Declaration on Child Rights, reaffirming the Northeastern states’ commitment to coordinated action, inter-state cooperation and stronger child protection systems. The declaration will be submitted to the Ministry of Women and Child Development for consideration.
