The Nagaland government has directed all village authorities across the state to strictly enforce the total ban on single-use plastic (SUP) items in pursuance of Supreme Court directions and existing state notifications on plastic waste management.

According to a Home Department notification, the directive follows the Supreme Court judgement dated February 14, 2026, and provisions under the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021 notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

The notification reiterated the prohibition on plastic carry bags, plastic cutlery including plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws, thermocol decorative items, polythene, nylon, PVC materials and other single-use plastic products.

The state also reiterated the ban on use of flex banners, boards and posters by government departments, institutions and agencies during functions and programs.

Among other items prohibited are plastic flags, balloon sticks, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, plastic trays, packaging films around sweet boxes and invitation cards, cigarette packet wrappings and PVC banners below 100 microns.

The notification further reiterated the total ban on packaged drinking water bottles below 20 litres capacity during meetings, functions, seminars and for personal consumption.

All Deputy Commissioners have been directed to disseminate the instructions to village authorities for immediate and strict compliance and to ensure proper collection and safe disposal of banned single-use plastic waste.
