The Nagaland Police have issued a public advisory regarding the rising issue of WhatsApp account hacking in recent days. According to Nagaland Police, scammers target users by sending malicious links or APK files through WhatsApp and other social media platforms. Clicking on these links or installing these files can compromise users’ accounts. In some cases, scammers may also gain access by convincing victims to share their WhatsApp verification codes.

Once an account is hacked, scammers often use it to request financial assistance from the victim’s contacts, leading to monetary losses. Additionally, other criminal activities can be carried out using the compromised account, putting both the victim and their contacts at risk.

To safeguard against these hacks, the Nagaland Police have recommended enabling two-step verification for added security, which provides an extra layer of protection for WhatsApp accounts. It also advised users to avoid clicking on or installing links and APK files from unknown sources, as these could contain harmful malware. Furthermore, users are urged never to share their WhatsApp verification code, as WhatsApp will never ask for it, and any request for it should be considered a scam.

In the event that an account is hacked, the police urge users to spread awareness about the breach to prevent further financial loss or criminal activity. It is also recommended to recover the hacked WhatsApp account by reinstalling the app to stop further misuse.

Further, if any monetary requests are received via WhatsApp, Nagaland Police advised that users should always call the person directly to confirm the authenticity of the request before taking any action.
