Nagaland University hosts international lecture on Tethyan geodynamics, seismic hazards

The Department of Geology, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, hosted an international lecture series and interactive session titled “From Alps to the Himalaya: Tethyan Geodynamics, Stratigraphy and Seismic Hazard” on August 6 in collaboration with AGH University of Krakow, Poland.

The programme was organised under the Polish grant project “Internationalization of AGH University of Krakow through Educational and Research Cooperation with Academic Institutions in Central and South Asia”, with the objective of promoting joint research and educational opportunities through comparative studies of the Alpine and Himalayan orogenic systems.

Chaired by Prof. S.K. Srivastava, the inaugural session began with a welcome address by Prof. Vikoleno Rino, Head of the Department. Prof. S.K. Singh, Dean, School of Sciences, delivered the keynote address, highlighting Tethyan Himalayan-Alpine dynamics and encouraging active scientific participation.

Dr. Micha³ Krobicki of AGH University of Krakow highlighted key geological features of the Alpine system and outlined upcoming collaborative projects and workshops. Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Venuh stressed the importance of international academic partnerships and comparative research in advancing geoscientific knowledge.

The technical session, moderated by Ch. Mangi Khuman, featured presentations on Tethyan fossils, depositional environments, Quaternary seismic deposits in the Indian and Nepalese Himalayas, geophysical subsurface exploration and earthquake hazard studies.

The event provided a platform for strengthening joint research and long-term academic collaboration between Nagaland University and AGH University of Krakow.
