Nagaland’s forward Nahpan scored four goals as the team defeated Lakshadweep 7-0 in their first match of the Junior Boys National Football Championship for the Dr BC Roy Trophy 2024-25 tier-2 at the Nurul Amin Stadium, Nagaon, Assam on Tuesday.

Nahpan (jersey no. 15) completed his hat-trick in just 18 minutes, scoring in the 27th, 37th, and 40th minutes, and added his fourth goal in the 88th minute.

Substitute Atsibu Medoze scored in the 65th and 84th minutes, and Ayhunlo Chung scored in the 92nd minute to complete the rout. Nagaland with the huge victory takes three points in their debut match for U-17 national tournament.

Nagaland is clubbed with Andaman & Nicobar, Manipur, Lakshadweep, Haryana in Group A.

A total of 19 players, along with four officials including team manager Azho Sophie, coach Khwetelhi Thopi, assistant coach Kechi, and physio Zakie Seletsu, are representing the state at the national tournament.

After the match, team coach Thopi credited God for the victory. He told Mokokchung Times, “I’m very satisfied with the performance of my boys. Today was the first match, and they played exceptionally well.”

He mentioned that their next opponent, Haryana, is a strong team, and they need a good game plan.

“I have confidence in my players. If they stick to the plan and play accordingly, we can play beautiful football and win the game. Please remember us in your prayers,” he added.

Assistant coach Kechi remarked, “This is our first match in this national tournament, and everything went well, ending with a 7-0 win. The weather was quite humid for the past two days, but this morning’s rain favored us.”

Meanwhile, the second match will be against Haryana on August 1 at Dawson HS & MP School Ground.

It may be mentioned the BC Roy Trophy Tier 2 will have 19 teams divided into four groups – three groups with five and one group with four – with the group winners progressing to the semi-finals.
