NSL U-20 scholarship team flagged off ahead of national training program

A send-off programme was held today at the Nagaland Olympic Association Office, Sovima, for the NSL U-20 Scholarship Team, marking the beginning of a landmark journey under the NSL Scholarship for U-20 initiative.

This ambitious program is a collaborative effort between the Nagaland Super League (NSL), Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), and the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), JSW, aimed at nurturing the next generation of football talent from Nagaland, the NSL informed in a press release.

The programme commenced with a solemn moment of silence in memory of Late Atuo Mezhür, in recognition of his lasting contributions to sports and youth development. This was followed by a special prayer led by Rev. Zhau Sanchu, Pastor at CRC Sovima, who blessed the players and support staff as they prepare for this transformative journey.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Abu Metha, Advisor to the Chief Minister and Chairman of IDAN, who also serves as Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India and Secretary General of the NOA.

Also present was Benei M Lamthiu, MLA and Chairman of the Nagaland Super League (NSL), General Secretary of the Nagaland Football Association (NFA). Other notable attendees included Mughato Aye, Vice President of the NFA; Kuputo Shohe, Joint Secretary of the NOA; and Neivikuolie Nicholas Khatsu, Assistant Secretary General of the NOA.

In their addresses, the dignitaries applauded the NSL Scholarship as a visionary initiative conceptualized by the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, and highlighted its significance in placing Nagaland’s footballing talent on the national map.

Program Overview:
The NSL U-20 Scholarship Team, consisting of 16 footballers and 3 support staff, is undergoing a one-month fully-sponsored high-performance training program from 8th June to 7th July 2025. The NSL is covering all associated costs including round-trip flight tickets (Dimapur–Bellary), accommodation, and a monthly allowance for each participant.

Phase 1: 8th–18th June, Chümoukedima
A 10-day pre-departure training camp focused on fitness, tactical readiness, and mental conditioning. A friendly match was also held against SC Nagaland Thonburi United at the Chümoukedima Football Stadium, offering competitive exposure to the team.

Phase 2: 18th June–7th July, Inspire Institute of Sport, Bellary
A 20-day elite-level training program at IIS, India’s premier privately-funded sports facility. Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Bellary, Karnataka has shaped champions such as Neeraj Chopra, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik, and has contributed to over 243 international medals, including Olympic podium finishes.

Additionally, through a partnership with Bengaluru FC, one of India’s top football clubs, players will train with the club’s academy, participate in friendly matches, and gain real-time insights into a professional football environment.

In a significant show of support and interest, the Chief Minister of Nagaland is also scheduled to visit the IIS during the training period to interact with the players and coaching team, reaffirming the government’s commitment to youth and sports development.

IIS is India’s first privately-funded, world-class sports training facility and has played a vital role in shaping the country’s top sporting talent. IIS is home to India’s Champion collectively earning an impressive tally of 243 International Medals including 4 Olympic Podium finishes, 29 World Championship medals, 26 Asian Games medals and 18 Commonwealth Games medals.  Notably, several Tokyo and Paris Olympians such as Neeraj Chopra, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, have trained at this very institute, underscoring the legacy and elite environment that our players will be part of.

The NSL stated that this initiative marks a bold new step in Nagaland’s footballing journey, empowering athletes through world-class training, professional mentorship, and unwavering institutional support.

“The NSL Scholarship for U-20 is not just a sports program — it’s a symbol of aspiration, transformation, and the future of football in Nagaland,” it added.
