Kohima, February 14 (MTNews): Just one day after the Supreme Court directed the Nagaland State Election Commission to notify elections to urban local bodies with 33% women quota before March 14, the Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Tuesday said the state government will announce election to the urban local bodies (ULBS) in March this year with 33% reservation for women.

“ULB election will be announced in March this year and we will implement the 33% reservation for women,” Rio said during the election campaign kick-off of NDPP candidate Dr Neikiesalie Nicky Kire from 9 Kohima Town Assembly Constituency at PWD Junction in Kohima.

Saying that the state will not receive grants from the Centre if the ULB elections are not conducted, Rio said that if some sections of the society object to the 33% reservation for women this time, it might be implemented only in those areas that accept it. On taxation, he said that elected members of the ULBs will decide how and who to tax, adding that the taxes collected from the people of a specific town or council will be used for developing the specific area only.
