Kohima, 23 May (MTNews): The Youth Resources & Sports (YRS) Department of Nagaland is set to establish ‘Youth Recreational and Impact Centres’ as part of the State Innovative Program launched on 22 May 2023. These government-approved centres will be located in Longleng, Mon, Tuensang, and Kiphire.

The project aims to address the challenges faced by young people in these areas due to limited options, which often result in increased rates of drug and alcohol misuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancies, and various other issues. By establishing these centres, the YRS Department intends to provide a wholesome and safe environment for the youth, while also creating positive experiences that can contribute to lower crime rates and the development of educated, happy, and responsible citizens.

Currently, Nagaland lacks well-equipped community centres that cater to the needs of the youth, particularly in non-metro areas. The existing recreational facilities, mostly privately owned businesses, often come with high costs that are unaffordable for many adolescents. Consequently, there is a pressing need for free community recreational centres in the state.

Highlighting the situation, the department emphasized that the lack of such centres compels most young individuals to spend their free time at home or on the streets, which gives rise to numerous juvenile-related problems, including depression, substance abuse, and juvenile crimes. Recognizing the crucial role of these centres, the department stressed that they would provide a healthy outlet for creativity and energy, thereby contributing to long-term community improvement.
