Vikali Awomi (13), a Class 8 student of GMS Marepkong has emerged as the winner under the Classes 5-8 category of the Ao Spell Bee Competition organised by Ao Riju (under the aegis of the Ao Senden) on the 18th of October, 2025 at the Ao Senden Conference Hall, Mokokchung.
Competing against participants from both Private and Government schools, Vikali Awomi ultimately clinched the title with the correct spelling of the word “Arürdangküm” meaning testing for battle (Arok Osep Ao dictionary). “It was the most difficult word. I wasn’t sure about the spelling but tried anyhow,” says Vikali.
Speaking to MT, Vikali said that she practiced for an hour for seven days prior to the competition. In addition she was helped by her teachers and family members.
“It was a first time experience for me to participate in an inter-school competition. I was nervous but not scared,” beamed Vikali.
On winning, she felt happy and emotional as she never expected to win.
Vikali aspires to be a theologian and look towards getting enrolled in a government school for pursuing high school education due to financial constraints. She has no qualms about studying in a government school as she feels that teachers in government schools are ” friendly and well qualified.”
Vikali’s inspiring win is a motivation to students in Government schools to participate in academic events and break barriers in competitive platforms.
