The 13th edition of the Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Trophy 2024 commenced today at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex, Mokokchung. The inaugural match of the tournament was played between MH-10 Kohima and Changtongya Volleyball Association, with the former winning the tightly contested game. Incidentally, these two teams—arguably the biggest rivalry in Nagaland’s volleyball circuit today—were the finalists in the last edition of the tournament, where the team from Kohima also emerged victorious.
A total of 12 teams are participating in the tournament, including those from Wokha, Dimapur, and Kohima. Nine league matches were played on day one of the tournament. Three more league matches and the quarterfinals will be played on day two, while the semifinals and final matches are scheduled for day three.
The tournament was inaugurated by Imtipokyim, President of the Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA), who served as the guest of honor.
In his address, the MDVA President acknowledged the efforts of the Luke Sasong Sporting Association (LSSA), an active affiliate of the MDVA. Among its various sports initiatives, the LSSA, under the aegis of the Mangmetong Students’ Union, has taken volleyball under its wing, nurturing numerous talented players over the years.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the tournament, the MDVA President encouraged the participants to demonstrate true sportsmanship and athletic excellence in every match. He also honored the legacy of Luke Sasong and called on the community to come together to create an unforgettable experience.
