Kohima, 25 November (MTNews): The Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, emphasized that a sense of equality is a must for growth and development in society. He called on all right-thinking citizens to respect women while speaking at the launching program today for the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence at Kohima, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Sharma stated that the best way to handle violence against women and girls is through women police. However, he admitted that the Nagaland Police is handicapped due to the shortage of women personnel. Despite this, he expressed hope that more women police personnel will be recruited in the days to come in accordance with the government’s reservation policy. Sharma suggested that line departments develop a proper mechanism to tackle violence issues more effectively.
Martha R Ritse, Secretary of Social Welfare, mentioned that it is very disturbing that, of all gender-based violence cases reported, the number of domestic violence is the highest. Ritse urged all stakeholders to support the cause of gender equality.
Meanwhile, Kohima Deputy Commissioner Kumar Ramnikant urged women, neighbors, and agencies to promptly report incidents of violence to authorities. He also appealed to all men to put in commitment and efforts to change society and foster an atmosphere where women and girls can live securely.
