Mokokchung, April 9 (MTNews): In what could possibly cause a major setback to the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) Mokokchung Region, 17 of its office bearers announced their resignation from both primary and active membership of the party today. They made the declaration in a press conference called by the resigning members at Majakong ward, Mokokchung.

The decision to this effect came after the NDPP general convention which was held in November 2021 where the NDPP Mokokchung Region party reorganization was also to be made during the general convention. It was stated that the election committee for Mokokchung Region from the NDPP central was deputed and a series of meetings were held where the consensus candidates were recommended and accordingly submitted for NDPP Mokokchung Region.

However, they said, in the month of February 2022, the appointment of the new office bearers was issued by the NDPP Central office which was “not in consonance with the list submitted by the election committee to the central office.”

Hence, the allegation made by the 17 resigning members was that the list was “not as per the submission made by the election committee which was a backdoor appointment made against the constitution of the party.”

Therefore, the 17 members including 10 vice presidents and 7 secretaries said that they have “lost hope in the party and decided to resign from a party which has no respect and honour for its constitution.”

President of NDPP Mokokchung Region, N. Bendang Jamir when enquired of the latest development in his party told Mokokchung Times that the Region office has not yet received any formal resignation letter from anybody as of today. He, however, said that any member of a political party has the liberty to resign and that those who are resigning must have their own reasons. He also expressed regret at the news of some of his colleagues resigning from the party and termed it as “unexpected.”

On the question of the resigning members’ claims that leadership appointments were made “against the Constitution of the party,” the NDPP Mokokchung Region president stated that, as per the party’s Constitution, the Election Committee of the Region makes proposals to the NDPP Central Election Commission and that the latter has the final say on the matter.

He also cited that NDPP Central Election Commission altering the proposals made by the Mokokchung Region Election Committee was not an isolated case and added that similar cases have happened with other Regions of the party. “If they allege that it was against the party Constitution, then they should pinpoint the particular Article and Clause of the Constitution,” he added.
