Defending champions KSUM fall to SSS in opening match
Defending champions Konyak Students’ Union Mokokchung (KSUM) suffered a 0–1 defeat to Sports Society Soyim (SSS) in the opening match of the 27th MDFA Trophy 2025. A well-taken strike by Chubalemba in the 57th minute proved decisive, giving SSS the first three points of the tournament.
KSUM, missing several key players, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the game. Despite the setback, Leangin delivered a standout performance, creating multiple promising chances that went unconverted. Phaowang came close in the 60th minute but missed what appeared to be an easy opportunity. He made good runs but lacked the finishing touch, while Samuel also squandered a clear chance on target for KSUM.
SSS, despite securing the lead, were not clinical in front of goal and failed to capitalise on several opportunities. Shiponglepa and Imtimenba had notable outings, helping their side hold off KSUM’s late attempts to find an equaliser.
Speaking to the press after the match, Jungpetrong Longkumer, Manager of SSS, said the team had “a tough game” but played their best and “got it right.”
KSUM Captain Kapzei admitted that it was “a poor start to the tournament” and not what the team expected. He explained that many of their players are currently participating in the ongoing Noke Trophy in Mon District, which affected their performance. However, he expressed hope that the team will bounce back once the full squad returns.
Leiwang Konyak, Manager of KSUM, shared a similar sentiment, expressing confidence ahead of their next crucial match against Team Gilgal – considered one of the favorites to win the tournament.
