Wokha, November 6 (MTNews): The two-day event of the 2nd Canoe Spring/Boat Race which is a part of the ongoing Hornbill Festival began on December 6, 2022 at Falcon Creek, Tsuza Eryu Doyang, Pangti village under Wokha district. The event was graced by Penthungo Ngullie, Principal, Bailley Baptist College, Wokha as the special guest.

 

 

 

 

Addressing the participants on the first day of the competition, Penthungo Ngullie said that despite Wokha district being blessed with rich natural resources and beautiful landscape with potential to generate revenues for self-sustainability, he lamented that the people are yet to explore the potentials they are blessed with.

 

He therefore urged the people to think in terms of exploring the resources and potentials to a greater level so that through this kind of activities one can create a greater platform to attract tourists as well as generate revenue and boost the economy for a progressive society.

 

He said, “With their small initiative today there will be a bigger impact tomorrow” and called the organizers to keep pushing forward so that their action and efforts are recognized and later become a mega event.

 

Meanwhile, he appreciated the fishermen for taking part in the two days event despite their engagement in their profession. He also stated that it also strengthens the unity among the fishermen union and is part of a recreation added to their routine.

 

On the first day of the event, a canoe sprint for the fishermen/single category was held, where 14 participants took part in the competition.

 

Lawerence Yanthan, Longshithung Kikon and Nzanthung Shitiri emerged as the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up respectively. The event organizers informed that on the second day, canoe sprint will be conducted in a double category with one fisherman partnering with any of the visitors or spectators.
