The Kumlong Sporting Association is set to host the 2nd Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament 2023, following the success of last year’s inaugural edition. The tournament will take place at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex in Mokokchung under the theme “Forging Champions.”
The Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA) is supporting the tournament, which will be held from 9-11 August, 2023.
During a press briefing held today, Dr Imlinichet Imchen, the convenor of the organizing committee, announced a cash prize of Rs 30,000 for the champions and Rs 20,000 for the runners-up. Additionally, individual awards will be given for Best Setter, Best Spiker, and Player of the Tournament. The champion team will also earn free entry to the Imchaba Master Memorial Nagaland Open Volleyball Trophy, one of the most coveted volleyball tournaments in the state.
An exciting addition this year is the introduction of the “Super Spiker” event, where individual players from participating teams can compete without any entry fee. The winner of the event will walk away with a cash prize of Rs 2000.
The Kumlong Sporting Association (KSA) was established in 2016 under the Kumlong Ward Yimden (Council) to oversee sports activities in the ward. The association’s primary objective is to promote and support young, aspiring athletes.
Since its inception, the KSA has actively participated and competed in various sports events within the Mokokchung District, striving to provide a suitable platform for young talents, the organizers said during the presser.
The Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament aims to be a unique event in Mokokchung Town, focusing on identifying and encouraging grassroots talent. The tournament will provide a platform for enthusiastic amateur volleyball athletes residing in the 18 wards of Mokokchung town.
It may be recalled that Sungkomen ward lifted the first Mokokchung Inter-Ward Volleyball Tournament last year.
The KSA aspires to make this tournament an annual event in the town and establish it as a running trophy, benefiting future generations.
Apart from the exciting volleyball matches, the tournament promises a vibrant atmosphere with food stalls and various entertainment options to keep spectators engaged throughout the event. The matches will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis, adding to the suspense and competitiveness.
To participate, teams must register by submitting the necessary forms along with a registration fee of Rs 1500 per team. The technical team has also stipulated that participants representing each ward must have been residents of that ward for a minimum of one year to be eligible for the tournament.
