In a formal representation to the Advisor of School Education, Ao frontal organizations highlighted significant educational gaps in Mokokchung district, emphasizing the shortage of Government Higher Secondary Schools (GHSS) to accommodate students progressing beyond matriculation. The representation, jointly submitted by Ao Senden, Watsü Mungdang, AKM, and Ao Riju, outlined that while Mokokchung has 35 Government High Schools (GHSs), only five have been upgraded to Higher Secondary Schools, a number deemed “not sufficient” to meet the district’s needs.
“Despite the presence of recently upgraded GHSS across the state, Mokokchung has not seen a single GHS upgraded to GHSS since 2011,” the organization stated, underlining the limited opportunities for local students. They pointed out that many students, due to economic limitations, are unable to pursue higher secondary studies away from home. “For higher academic progression, they are compelled to move to other places, which has caused financial constraints for both parents and the students’ community itself. Hence, the upgradation of GHS to GHSS is the much-awaited development in the district,” the representation read.

The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang has undertaken an initiative to visit all the Government Schools under Mokokchung District. It was mentioned that out of 198 schools, 58 schools have been visited till date, with the visits focused on evaluating teacher appointments, student enrolment, and overall learning environments. The organization noted a range of urgent needs in several schools, including teacher shortages, the lack of specific subject teachers, and inadequate infrastructure, including offices and classrooms.
