8% of Nagaland’s population in informal sector; Women make up majority, says Governor

In Nagaland, women make up a significant portion of the unorganized sector, contributing invaluable work that often goes unnoticed, said Governor La Ganesan. According to the 2021 e-Shram portal report, around 8% of the state’s population is engaged in the informal sector, with women comprising more than half of this workforce. Many of these women are the primary breadwinners for their families, with their resilience and dedication shaping both the state’s and the nation’s socio-economic landscape, Ganesan added.

The Governor was speaking at a one-day seminar on “Women Working in the Unorganized Sector in Nagaland: Challenges and Opportunities” organized by the Entrepreneur Associates at the State Academy Hall in Kohima on November 28, 2024.

Addressing the challenges faced by women in the informal sector, Ganesan highlighted issues such as irregular income, lack of adequate infrastructure, and limited access to financial services. He emphasized the need for greater awareness of governmental welfare schemes designed to support these workers. The Governor stressed that initiatives like the seminar are essential in achieving India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

“Women play vital roles in the socio-economic development of our country but are usually the unsung heroines,” he said, expressing his happiness for the seminar, which aims to acknowledge the roles of these women and empower them.

The Governor further acknowledged the challenges facing workers in the informal sector, including irregular income, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to financial services. These hurdles highlight the critical need for awareness and education about various welfare schemes.

“Initiatives like today’s seminar are steps in the right direction, aligning with India’s ambitious vision of Viksit Bharat 2047,” he said, adding that every citizen’s effort is needed. “Acknowledging the unyielding spirit of these women is imperative for national progress,” Ganesan concluded.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Entrepreneur Associates for their commitment to entrepreneurship and sustainable development in the state. The organization has been instrumental in organizing seminars, business training, environmental awareness programs, tree plantation initiatives, and providing financial support to nurture aspiring entrepreneurs. Contributions like theirs are crucial to building a stronger, more inclusive Nagaland and India, the Governor stated.

The Governor urged everyone to continue supporting these efforts, ensuring that every woman—especially those in the unorganized sector—receives the opportunities and support they deserve. He called for collective action to create a future where every woman’s contribution is recognized, enabling society to flourish.
