Mokokchung, August 29 (MTNews): The NPP Nagaland expressed shock over the “cruel and unimaginable manner in which the personnel of Assam Police tortured and killed Late Henveih Phom, resident of Anaki C Village, Mokokchung District, who was arbitrarily arrested and taken to Sibsagar Jail” and said that they are “infuriated and immensely grieved” by it.

The party through a press release questioned the “surprising silence” maintained by the Nagaland State Government and asked why “this matter has not been discussed at the Chief Minister’s level till date.”

The party also called upon the Central and State Governments of Assam and Nagaland to immediately compensate the family members of the deceased with adequate ex-gratia.

In a press note, the NPP Nagaland noted that Late Henveih Phom was arrested from within Anaki Village jurisdiction without the consent or intimation to the Mokokchung District authorities including the Mokokchung Police and added that they have learnt from credible sources that Late Henveih Phom was in “good health and sound mind” at the time of his arrest.

“Such cold blooded killing of a Naga civilian by the Assam Police cannot be and will not be tolerated at any cost. This dastardly act is tantamount to gross violation of human rights and deserves unequivocal condemnation from all corners,” the party said.

The party asserted that it cannot be a mute spectator when such “grievous crimes” are being committed upon the “weak and innocent Nagas by the Assam Police” especially at a time when everyone, including the citizens of both Assam and Nagaland, are yearning for peace and development.

The party while showing strong condemnation accused the Assam police of “barbaric and gruesome torture and killing” of Late Henveih Phom and demanded the government authorities including both the State Governments of Assam and Nagaland to immediately book everyone responsible for the “barbarous and villainous act.”

Additionally, the party requested the concerned authorities to give “befitting and the most stringent punishment” to the offenders at the earliest to ensure that such heinous and cowardly acts of violence by men in uniform are not repeated anytime in the future.

NPP Nagaland offered their humble prayers and homage to the deceased and also offered profound condolence to the bereaved family members and relatives.
