As many as thirty-two people lost their lives in around thirty-four traffic accidents in Nagaland in 2021.
According to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the number of traffic accidents in the country increased from 3,68,828 in 2020 to 4,22,659 in 2021.
1.73 lakh people lost their lives in around 4.22 lakh traffic accidents in the country with Uttar Pradesh reporting the highest number of deaths in such mishaps at 24,711 deaths followed by Tamil Nadu which recorded 16,685 deaths.
With 32 deaths, Nagaland had the third lowest number of fatalities due to traffic accidents in the country, only above Lakshadweep with one fatalities and Andaman and Nicobar Islands with twenty two fatalities, the report said.
Nagaland registers 43 cases of suicides
Meanwhile, at 120 deaths per million population, the rate of deaths by suicide across India in 2021 soared to the highest level ever recorded, rising 6.1% from the previous year, new data from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows, highlighting the toll the pandemic appears to have taken on the emotional well-being of Indians.
As per the report released by NCRB, a total of 1,64,033 suicides were reported in the country during 2021, out of which Nagaland registered 43 cases.
The country during 2021 showed an increase of 7.2% in comparison to 2020 and the rate of suicides has increased by 6.2% during 2021 over 2020.
The report also mentioned, “Majority of suicides were reported in Maharashtra (22,207), followed by 18,925 suicides in Tamil Nadu, 14,965 suicides in Madhya Pradesh, 13,500suicides in West Bengal and 13,056 suicides in Karnataka.
The National Average for suicide in 2021 was 12.0, while Nagaland’s average was 1.8%.
“Rate of suicides i.e. the number of suicides per one lakh population, has been widely accepted as a standard yardstick for comparison,” the report said.
73 accidental deaths reported in Nagaland
A total number of 73 accidental deaths were reported in Nagaland in 2021 according to the NCRB report.
With this, the State had the lowest rate of accidental deaths of 3.3 % while Chhattisgarh registered the highest rate with 59.2%. The National average was 29.1%.
“Accidental deaths have been grouped into two broad categories i.e. ‘Deaths due to Forces of Nature and ‘Deaths due to Other Causes’. Classification of types and causes of accidental deaths has been done for statistical purpose only,” the report said.
