Mokokchung, November 16 (MTNews): Along with the rest of the country, Mokokchung Press Club on Wednesday observed National Press Day under the theme “Media’s Role in Nation Building” with P. Tia Mollier, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, Fazl Ali College as the guest speaker at Hotel Magnus on 16 November, 2022.
Mollier in his address asserted that learning is essential in order to live and that the times call for people to “unlearn and relearn.”
Highlighting the importance of media and press in the age of information technology, he cited the current international geo political crises in Europe, and opined that media there is playing an important role in the Ukraine-Russia crisis.
He noted that media have been evolving owing to ever changing socio-economic and political dynamics. In this regard, he emphasized on six areas where journalists could contribute to nation building, with particular reference to Mokokchung.
His six areas of concern included Mokokchung’s fertility rate falling below replacement level, importance of having examination centers such as CUET in the district, improved education sector, issues relating to senior citizens and improving the writing skills of students. His sixth concern was with regard to journalists bringing out factual reports.
Limalenden Longkumer, president of Mokokchung Press Club while delivering his welcome address stressed on the significance of celebrating the National Press Day and underscored that the press and media fraternity in Mokokchung must adapt to the changing times but without compromising on the ethics of journalism.
The proceedings of the event were chaired by Sashimeren Jamir, secretary of Mokokchung Press Club. An interactive session was also held following the guest speakers speech where a wide range of issues pertaining to the press in Mokokchung were discussed.
The National Press Day was also observed by the Kohima Press Club and the Dimapur Press Club as well. Formed in 2008, Mokokchung Press Club is the youngest of the only three press clubs in Nagaland.
