The FIFA World Cup 2022 kicked off on Sunday with a visually striking opening ceremony at Al-Bayt Stadium ahead of the tournament’s first match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador.
The ceremony started with American actor Morgan Freeman talking about hope, unity and tolerance in a dulcet voice and an Arabian theme with camels.
Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani of Qatar arrived at the stadium surrounded by FIFA President Gianni Infantino to a roaring crowd.
Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and the presidents of Egypt, Turkey and Algeria, as well as the United Nations secretary general, were among world leaders in the tent-shaped stadium ahead of the opening match.
Meanwhile, South Korean pop star Jung Kook sang ‘Dreamers’, the tournament song, alongside Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi at the stadium in Al Khor.
It may be mentioned that Qatar is the smallest nation to host football’s biggest global event.
The build-up to the first World Cup to be held in a Muslim country in the Middle East has been overshadowed by a number of controversies, including deaths of migrant workers and treatment of LGBT people in Qatar.
Qatar 2022 is, by far, the most expensive World Cup in history. Qatar is estimated to have spent as much as $220 billion in the twelve years since being chosen as a World Cup host in late 2010, more than 15 times what Russia spent for the 2018 event.
The opening spectacle of lights, fireworks and mysticism transported the 50000-plus spectators at the Bedouin tent-shaped Al Bayt stadium into the surreal world of Arabian Nights.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is set to break all viewership records as at least 5 billion people from all across the globe are expected to be glued to their television sets and the digital media platforms to follow the 29-day football fiesta that began on November 20.
