Kohima, November 22 (MTNews): The Nagaland Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources celebrated World Fisheries Day at Thizama Government Fish Farm in Kohima on Monday, which was attended by Department officials, staff, fish farmers, and District Fishery Officers from different districts.

 

 

To commemorate World Fisheries Day 2022, the Department organized a special training program on “Recent Advances in Fisheries” for the State’s progressive fish farmers as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, and also had a fruitful interaction with the fish farmers.

 

Later, Sotsula, Commissioner & Secretary, F&AR, chaired a formal program organized by the Department. Kiyangulie Rutsa, Pastor of Chüziema Baptist Church, graced the program. Lotimenba, Addl. Director, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of celebrating World Fisheries Day to show solidarity with all fishermen, aquaculture, and affected stakeholders worldwide, as it aims to draw attention to habitat destruction, overfishing, and other serious threats to the sustainability of marine and inland stocks.

 

Ketusielie Angami, Joint Director, initiated the Best Fish Farmer Award presentation. The Department presented citations and cash prizes to the districts’ ‘Best Fish Farmer,’ and the awardees shared their success stories.
The Commissioner and Secretary challenged all fish farmers to work harder and double their income in order to sustain their livelihood. She also encouraged fish farmers to raise awareness among other farmers about profitable fish culture ventures in order to increase fish production in the state. Furthermore, she emphasised the importance of integrated fish farming, which generates additional income and can help to address the issues of unemployment and food security.

 

Sentinaro, DFO, Kohima concluded the program with a vote of thanks.
