The Law Commission of India has received over 50 lakh responses on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) from across the country. The Commission had invited public suggestions and feedback on the proposed UCC and the response has exceeded all expectations. The deadline for submitting responses was extended to 28 July 2023 from the earlier deadline of 15 July.
In an unprecedented display of public participation, citizens from diverse backgrounds and regions have voiced their thoughts on the UCC, which aims to bring uniformity in personal laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption. The massive number of responses highlights the significance and sensitivity of the issue for the Indian populace. The Commission has been tasked with examining the need for a UCC and to suggest a model law.
Recognizing the immense interest and engagement from citizens, the Law Commission has extended the deadline for submitting views on the UCC draft until July 28. This move allows more individuals and organizations to contribute their perspectives and recommendations, ensuring a comprehensive analysis of public opinion before finalizing the code.
The responses received by the Commission have been varied, with some people supporting the UCC and others opposing it. Some of the key issues raised in the responses include the role of religion in personal laws, the need for gender equality, and the protection of minority rights.
The Commission will now analyze the responses and make its recommendations to the government. The government will then decide whether to introduce a UCC in India.
Any interested individual, institution or organization may submit their opinion on the issue of UCC till 28 July on the designated link on LCI’s website or via email at membersecretary-lci@gov.in.
