While it is heartening to learn that repair works on the Mokokchung-Mariani road or NH-702D are being carried out by the PWD (NH) Mokokchung Division, even though the road is yet to be officially handed over to the state government by the NHIDCL, it is worthwhile to remind ourselves that there is another section of the same Mokokchung-Mariani road that needs immediate attention. The section of the said road, from Rotary Junction to IOC Intersection, is not officially part of NH-702D but is an integral part of the Mokokchung-Mariani road. This stretch of the Mokokchung-Mariani road, measuring about a little over a kilometer or so, falls entirely within the Mokokchung municipality area. It is not clear which department is responsible for maintaining the road, whether it is under the Urban Development Department or the PWD (R&B). Nevertheless, it should be noted that this is one of the main roads in Mokokchung town.
Starting from the Rotary Junction, the road passes through highly congested areas like the New Market and Milak Junction until it joins the NH-702D at the IOC Intersection. The area around this intersection, where the boundaries of the four wards of Aongza, Kumlong, Yimyu, and Kichutip converge and where two main roads intersect the NH-702D, is fast becoming a major commercial area. Arguably, apart from NH-2 that passes through the heart of the town, this stretch of the road (along with Hospital Road) is the most important road within the town.
Considering the significance and importance of this road, the authorities concerned as well as the stakeholders in general must give particular attention to its upkeep. Although it was repaired just a few years ago, the road is now rapidly deteriorating. Besides regular commuters, almost all heavy commercial vehicles use this road to enter the town. Therefore, the quality of work employed in repairing this vital road should be on par with the National Highways. While it may be challenging to improve the road’s gradient and alignment, maintaining the quality of its surface becomes even more crucial. Moreover, ensuring a proper roadside drainage system along the route and constructing pedestrian sidewalks wherever feasible are equally important. Due to the presence of commercial areas and several educational institutions along the road, it is also prone to traffic congestion and accidents.
Given the above-mentioned points, the importance of the Mokokchung-Mariani road from Rotary Junction to IOC Intersection cannot be underestimated. As crucial as it is, it is prudent for all concerned parties to ensure that the condition of the road does not deteriorate any further and that the damaged portions are promptly repaired. It is also expected of the authorities concerned to ensure that, at least for this once, such an important road as this one is repaired and properly maintained without giving the opportunity to the public to serve ultimatums.
