Dimapur, 17 October (MTNews): Concerned about the various challenges faced by the people of Nagaland, particularly in Dimapur district, a joint meeting of the Vigilance Committee of Naga Council, Dimapur, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) was held on 17 October 2023 at the Naga Council Office in Dimapur.
During the meeting, leaders in attendance shared their concerns and grievances on several important issues. These included the problem of illegal taxation by various groups and organizations, the rising prices of essential commodities, the influx of illegal immigrants and the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN), the prevalence of syndicate systems in the market, poor road conditions, the menace of drugs, traffic and parking congestions in the town, and other pressing challenges faced by the citizens of Dimapur.
The collective sentiment of the assembly led to the unanimous agreement to pursue the agenda discussed during the meeting and resolved that the assembly will serve a memorandum to the Government of India urging an early Naga Political Settlement. It also reiterated its commitment to the principle of “One Government One Tax.”
The meeting also resolved that a strict stance against the illegal collection of any form of taxation or donations by welfare organizations, unions, or other bodies, will be dealt with in accordance with the appropriate legal provisions.
The house resolved that all tribal bodies based in Dimapur will provide volunteers to the Vigilance Committee whenever necessary to combat drug abuse and illegal taxation, thereby supporting the efforts of law enforcement agencies.
The meeting brought together representatives from Dimapur-based Tribal Apex bodies, Unions, Associations, and Non-Naga Communities, totaling more than 100 Civil Society Organizations in Dimapur. Notably, the gathering included the Presidents of Chakhroma Public Organization (CPO), Western Sumi Hoho (WSH), and Naga Council Dimapur (NCD). The meeting was chaired by the Convener of the Vigilance Committee, Naga Council Dimapur.
