In a strategic move against the backdrop of social, economic, and political challenges, Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leader and former party president, is set to commence the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Khangjom in district Thoubal near Imphal on Sunday. The Congress party asserts that this Yatra is not a mere electoral campaign but an ideological battle against the prevailing politics of polarization and injustice.

At a press conference on the eve of the Yatra, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, alongside Manipur incharge Girish Chodankar, former Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, PCC President Meghachandra Singh, and former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister, declared the Yatra’s purpose as seeking justice for the people of the country on social, economic, and political fronts.

Ramesh emphasized the four pillars of the country’s constitution: Justice, Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. He criticized the current regime for allegedly denying social, economic, and political justice to the citizens over the past decade. Rahul Gandhi is poised to propagate a positive agenda during the approximately sixty-day Yatra, addressing public meetings, engaging with various sections of society, and interacting with civil society groups.

Highlighting the Yatra’s ideological nature, Ramesh stated that the Congress party is engaging in a battle against a political entity fostering polarization, social and economic injustice, and political dictatorship. He expressed concern about an atmosphere of fear in the country, emphasizing the Yatra’s aim to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge formally invited leaders from various states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and Maharashtra, to participate in the Yatra. During the initial eleven days, the Yatra will traverse five northeastern states, with Rahul Gandhi engaging in public meetings and interactions with civil society groups.

Before commencing the Yatra, Rahul Gandhi will pay homage to the martyrs at the historic Khongjom War Memorial in Thoubal. This memorial, inaugurated by former President Pranab Mukherjee in 2016, commemorates the martyrs of the last Anglo-Manipur War in 1891. Ibobi Singh emphasized the memorial’s significance for Manipur and the entire country.
