As the president of AKM has said in an exclusive interview with this newspaper, backdoor appointments are endemic in Nagaland. Backdoor appointments, specifically backdoor appointments in government sector, is one of the worst forms of corruption that is prevalent in Nagaland today. The practice of backdoor appointment has now become such a casual practice today, so much so that it has now become normalized and anybody landing a government job through this detestable means is appreciated as if it were a personal achievement.
While the very act of backdoor appointment is a disgraceful act in itself, deserving of punishment by law and condemnation by society, the even bigger appalling act here is how our society as collective of individuals have stooped so low as to accept this illicit practice as normal.
Backdoor appointment does not only deny the right to equal opportunity to other deserving candidates but it also fertilizes the ground for all other forms of corruption. Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB) is expected to buck the norm but it is yet to prove itself. As long as the society is ready to tolerate corruption, the people in power will continue to abuse their power and backdoor appointments will remain in one form or the other.
As long as the society is not willing to openly chastise those who engage in backdoor appointments, as long as the benefactors and beneficiaries of backdoor appointments are not punished, as long as they enjoy recognition, this appalling act of debauchery will remain in our land. It is not only the fault of the people involved in the dark business of backdoor appointments that are at fault here. The fault lies with the society as a whole.
