With the objective of nurturing future Neeraj Chopras, the Mokokchung Athletic Association (MAA) organized a Javelin throw competition for the first time in Mokokchung on National Javelin Day. The event took place at Imkongmeren Sports Complex and was held in collaboration with the Nagaland Athletic Association.

The competition featured three categories: U12, U14, and U16, drawing a turnout of around 60 children from various schools. According to Rongsentoshi, President of MAA, invitations were extended to all schools within Mokokchung town. Among the participants, the youngest competitors in the event were Yongmei and Tiaben Kichula, both 8-year-olds.

The president added that they would wish to involve schools outside of Mokokchung town such as Mangkolemba, Tuli and others in the future.

National Javelin Day is celebrated across India with similar events. The MAA President expressed their ambition to organize more such events in the future, with the possibility of holding a “semi-Olympic event.” Winners of the competition today were awarded certificates, medals, and gifts.

Formed in 2021, the MAA’s activities were initially hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic. The President highlighted the association’s commitment to grassroots talent scouting, aiming to find athletes capable of representing Nagaland at national and international levels. The MAA, despite being a young association, has been hosting events such as marathons and relay races.

Mokokchung, under the initiative of MAA, was also the only district from Nagaland to participate in the 19th National Inter District Junior Athletic Meet (NIDJAM) held from February 16 to 18, 2024, in Ahmedabad.

Speaking to MT, 10-year-old Waja, who was eagerly awaiting his turn to throw the javelin, expressed his excitement about the game. “I am excited because this is the first time,” the ten year old boy said. Molungsunep Kichu also echoed the same sentiment.

The event marked a significant step for Mokokchung’s athletic community, as the association strives its best to promote athletes in the district.
