“Before identifying ourselves as Nagas, Kukis, Meiteis, or members of any other ethnic group, we must see ourselves first and foremost as Weseans”
The students of Wesea (Western SouthEast Asia) have made a collective appeal for unity, peace, and progress in the region, expressing deep concern over the growing divisions and violence that have plagued their homeland. In a letter attested by Ruth Yimchunger, Vice President, WNSU (Wesean Naga Students Union), which was received here, called for a renewed commitment to harmony and cooperation among the diverse communities of “Wesea.”
The letter addresses the increasing divisions caused by ethnonationalist sentiments, extremist ideologies, and violent actions, which have fractured communities and weakened the shared identity of the Wesean people. The students stressed that these divisions will only lead to further destruction and called for a united effort to ensure a future of hope, progress, and unity.
“We must begin by uniting as one people. Before identifying ourselves as Nagas, Kukis, Meiteis, or members of any other ethnic group, we must see ourselves first and foremost as Weseans,” the letter stated. The students urged their fellow citizens to reject the forces that seek to divide them and to work towards a common vision for the future of Wesea.
The letter also addressed the misuse of the term “Wesea” by certain extremist elements, clarifying that the concept of Wesea should not be seen as a call for secession or separation from India. Instead, it should be understood as a call for greater cooperation, coexistence, and mutual respect among the region’s communities. “We can and must learn to coexist, while still preserving our unique identities and cultures,” the students wrote.
Recognizing the responsibility for change, the students pledged to be the change they wish to see in the world. They called for the rejection of violence, the advocacy of peace, and the promotion of education and development for all. The letter emphasized the importance of building bridges between communities, fostering dialogue, and working towards a brighter future for Wesea—a future where every community can thrive in harmony.
The students also made a direct appeal to the extremist groups operating in the region, urging them to reconsider their approach and to lay down their arms. “We appeal to you to lay down your arms and work for the common good. The time has come for us to focus on education, healthcare, and development—on building a future where our people can live in peace and prosperity. Violence will only lead to more bloodshed, and the blood of our people should not be shed in vain.,” the letter reads.
In a symbolic gesture of unity, the students reaffirmed their commitment to celebrating both Naga Independence Day and Indian Independence Day with pride. They emphasized that both flags symbolize important aspects of their identity and deserve respect.
As the region moves forward, the students of Wesea have called upon all Weseans to join them in their mission for peace and progress. “ As we move forward, let us do so with the understanding that our future depends on our ability to unite, coexist, and build a peaceful and prosperous Wesea together”.
