The District Institution of Education and Training (DIET), Mokokchung on Wednesday, September 4, opened its doors to a new batch of trainees, welcoming them with a celebration named “Taaja Shuruaat Utsav,” which translates to “Fresh Beginning Ceremony”. Emcees Moasen and Purkumla kicked off the program with an ‘ice-breaking’ activity, randomly selecting freshers from the audience to say a few words.

The students, dressed in a vibrant array of traditional Indian attire—sarees, kurtas, and lehengas—added color to the event, their outfits reflecting the ‘Arabian Nights’ theme chosen for the day.

Keduoneiu Sachu, Principal of DIET addressed the freshers with a blend of encouragement and wisdom. He spoke of the importance of creating a “joyful learning environment”.

“To be a better teacher,” he said, “one must equip themselves with skills that can only be honed through practice.” The principal also acknowledged the importance of native languages but advised the trainees to become fluent in “Spoken English” as it is the primary means of communication in the current educational setup.

Vice Principal Temsuwapang highlighted the importance of teachers in society, stating, “Teaching is the mother of all professions.” He also emphasized that “professionally qualified teachers” can provide quality education, which is crucial for the future of society.

Noting that the Diploma in Elementary Education course demands commitment, sincerity, hard work, and resilience, he challenged the students to give their best and encouraged them to build friendships with seniors and faculty members.

Imlimatsüng, while welcoming the freshers, spoke about how the institution serves as a community where they can find friends and a new home, which will help shape their characters. Aosen Amer, on behalf of the freshers, thanked the seniors and teachers and expressed hope for a mutually supportive environment during challenging times.

Mr Aosen Amer and Miss Moasenla were announced as Mr and Miss Freshers 2024. The second-year students presented an entertaining fusion of multiple acts and dances, while Sungjemsola captivated the audience with a solo performance. The program began with an invocation by Pongli. Senior lecturer Amen prayed for the freshers, while Kika expressed gratitude to all participants and contributors for the success of the event. The program concluded with a benediction by Toshimongla and a luncheon.
