The Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) Nagaland has expressed concerns regarding the total liquor prohibition in the state, considering its impact on numerous lives and the broader social implications.
In a press statement, ACAUT said it is crucial to voice its opinion rather than remain silent on this matter, “as pragmatism and empirical evidences over delusional thinking should converge whether to strengthen or do away with the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act.”
ACAUT asserted that the decision to uphold or abolish the prohibition rests solely with the government of the day. ACAUT noted that the issue is currently under consideration by the Cabinet and stressed that while pressure groups have the right to express their opinions, the government must act based on what it believes is in the best interest of the state.
“If the Government decides to continue with the prohibition Act then it must clearly state the reason and rationale for arriving at such decision,” ACAUT insisted, adding that the NLTP Act in its present form is “simply not implementable and is the root cause of its utter failure.”
ACAUT stated that the NLTP Act, which has been in effect for 35 years, has led to widespread bootlegging, resulting in corruption that permeates law enforcement and other sectors. It argued that the act’s failure has contributed to a mafia culture in society, with far-reaching consequences for the moral fabric of the community.
“Just a little investigation by any citizens in Dimapur will find unregulated booze shops in the grab of water bottle shops in every nook and corner of almost every colony and villages operated by goons and mafias,” it said.
ACAUT pointed out that, with only 336 posts for enforcement and 40 vacancies, the implementation of the NLTP is virtually impossible.
The organization also called for a more constructive dialogue among various denominations and church leaders regarding the issue of prohibition. It emphasized the need for the church to reflect on its proactive role in shaping the values of its congregation, which includes community members who contribute to civil society organizations.
“The Church needs to introspect the proactive role it has played over the years with their respective congregation who are also citizens the rest of the weekdays as members of various CSOs,” it said. “There should be more healthy public dialogues and charter a convergent path of action on prohibition in Nagaland,” it suggested.
ACAUT concluded that the NLTP Act, in its current form, is a mockery and should either be revoked or thoroughly amended for effective implementation.
“Our younger generation should no longer be raised in an environment of moral dilemma where hypocrisy has been promoted as a virtue by looking the other way which NLTP has normalized in our Christian majority society,” ACAUT lamented.
