Advisor Imchen lauds 50+ years of Soil & Water Conservation efforts in Nagaland at social night event

The Department of Soil & Water Conservation, organized a social night on 13th October 2024 at Niathu Resort, Chümoukedima which was graced by Advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation, Imkong L Imchen.

In his address, Imchen praised the Department of Soil & Water Conservation for its remarkable contribution to the state’s development, as the department marks over five decades of dedicated service since its establishment in 1968. He lauded the department’s efforts in driving sustainable agricultural practices, water conservation, and soil management in Nagaland.

Highlighting the importance of the department’s role, Imchen acknowledged the work of its 793-strong team, which includes 370 ministerial and 423 technical staff, alongside 106 gazetted officers. He emphasized how the department, equipped with advanced soil testing laboratories in every district, has made crucial advancements in providing farmers and agricultural workers with the support needed for soil testing and resource management.

The Advisor further commended the department’s initiative in establishing 17 meteorological observatories across Nagaland since 1989, ensuring a robust weather monitoring system. This system, he said, plays a pivotal role in disaster preparedness and risk reduction in a state with diverse geographical and climatic challenges.On the challenges posed by traditional jhum cultivation, water scarcity, and soil erosion, he stressed the department’s continuous focus on these critical areas. The department’s farmer training programs, he remarked, have successfully promoted sustainable agriculture and watershed management across the state.

Imchen also welcomed the department’s collaboration with the Brahmaputra Board, underscoring the importance of such partnerships in bridging development gaps and enhancing conservation efforts. “The Department of Soil & Water Conservation continues to be a pillar of support for the state’s environmental and agricultural sustainability, contributing immensely to the well-being of Nagaland and the broader region,” he concluded.

The evening also featured a special message from Dr. Ranbir Singh, IAS (R), Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of integrated water resources management and acknowledged the efforts of the Government of Nagaland in promoting conservation practices that align with national water policies. He also praised that the Soil & Water Conservation Department was very pro-active and plays a very important role for the state and for the people of Nagaland, and will help the Department in every way, he said.

Following the formal addresses, the night continued with entertainment programs, which showcased cultural performances that reflected the rich heritage of Nagaland. The “Social Night” marked a successful evening of recognition and appreciation for the ongoing efforts in soil and water conservation, bringing together individuals who are committed to preserving Nagaland’s natural resources for future generations.
