Mokokchung, March 22 (MTNews): World Water Day was observed in Mokokchung under the theme, “Groundwater: Making the invisible visible” organized by the PHED, Mokokchung Division at Sangtemla Community Hall, Mokokchung, March 22.

HeboZhimomi, Executive Engineer, PHED, Mokokchung Division, while delivering his keynote address observed that reduction of water in the catchment area was identified as the main cause of drying up of water source in the previous decades but now climate change is the new factor which is a threat to current water sources.

Zhimomi also asserted the present water supply may not be enough to meet the water demand in the near future because of reduction of water sources in the catchment areas along with increase in population and modernization.

“There is a huge gap between demand and supply of water which we can see in both the urban and rural areas because of modernization and industrialization,” he said.
In this regard, he asserted that the only alternative source is to tap the invisible water (ground water) which can be extracted via bore wells and ring wells but advised that it should be used judiciously.

“Jal Jeevan Mission is a good scheme under which the department is providing deep wells along with water recharge structures to provide safe and adequate drinking water to the people,” he added.

Asola Ozukum, president, Mokokchung Arts & Aesthetics Management (MAAM), also asserted that rain water harvesting is one solution to solve the water problem by applying the method of bore well recharge.

She also advocated starting grey water recycling which reduces almost 70 percent of domestic water usage by recycling used and waste water.
Alemjungla Longchar, Chemist, DWSM, PHED Mokokchung Division, also spoke on the topic “Ill effect of consuming contaminated water.”
