The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has submitted an urgent appeal to the Principal Director of Health and Family Welfare in Kohima, highlighting a severe shortage of healthcare personnel at the District Hospital Kiphire. In a letter addressed to the department, the USSC highlighted the overwhelming pressure on the existing medical staff, which has led to compromised care for patients.

One of the most pressing concerns raised in the letter is the lack of an Assistant Nursing Superintendent (ANS). The USSC stated that the hospital urgently requires an ANS to oversee nursing operations, manage staff workload distribution, and ensure that the hospital maintains high standards of patient care.

Currently, the hospital is functioning with only one Nursing Sister. According to the letter, at least three additional Nursing Sisters are needed to handle the increasing patient volume and ensure consistent, quality care.

The USSC also pointed out the absence of an Operating Theatre (OT) Sister, which is affecting the smooth conduct of surgical procedures at the hospital. They demanded for an immediate appointment.

In addition, the letter highlighted a significant lack of staff nurses, a situation that is hampering timely patient management, especially in the critical care units. Furthermore, the hospital urgently requires an anesthesiologist to support surgical operations and provide necessary anesthesia care.

Another critical issue raised in the letter is the transfer of Dr Apila, the only surgeon at the hospital, to Tuensang District Hospital. This has left a gap in the surgical department, and the USSC is urging the health authorities for a suitable replacement urgently.

“The absence of these essential healthcare professionals has created a crisis, severely hampering the hospital’s ability to provide adequate medical care. We sincerely request your prompt action to address these critical staffing needs to ensure that our community receives the healthcare it urgently requires,” it added.
