The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) observed National Legal Services Day across the districts today by organizing various programs and activities under the theme “Empowering Access to Justice.”


NSLSA Member Secretary, Neiko Akami, NJS, while delivering an address at a program in Losami Village, Phek, stated that legal services have become an integral part of the state, providing free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of society. He emphasized that the aim of legal services is to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen due to economic or other disabilities. Akami urged the gathering to approach the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), where anyone can avail of legal advice, adding that legal services are provided for free.

Sekhotso Rokha, Panel Lawyer, spoke on the Nagaland Village Council Act and the NDPS Act, while Vethothi Vero, Retainer Lawyer, highlighted the Nagaland Victim Compensation and POCSO Act.

In Longleng, the DLSA observed National Legal Services Day by organizing a day-long legal awareness and educational tour with LLCs from Shamakok Mission School, Good Shepherd School, and Christian High School. During the inaugural program, P Monyei Phom, Panel Lawyer, reviewed the activities of the DLSA and presented an overview of its initiatives. A Mane Phom, Retainer Lawyer, discussed the significance of the day and provided an overview of the basic procedures of law. The DLSA also visited the Observation Home, District Jail, and Sakhi One-Stop Centre, highlighting the key functions of these centers.

In Tuensang, the District Legal Services Authority observed National Legal Services Day in collaboration with the Goodwill Society Drug De-Addiction Centre, Tuensang. Antimangyang Chang, Retainer Lawyer of TDLSA, explained the NDPS Act, while Panel Lawyer Herola elaborated on legal services and free legal aid.

A Legal Awareness Program was organized by the Dimapur District Legal Services Authority in collaboration with the Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research on the theme “Empowering Access to Justice.” Sangto Longchar, Panel Lawyer, spoke on the significance of the day, legal services, their role, Lok Adalat, the victim compensation scheme, and the POCSO Act. L. Luzukhu Achumi, Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel, discussed FIRs, bail and bond procedures, basic legal rights, domestic violence, and some procedural aspects concerning BNSS.

To commemorate National Legal Services Day, the Wokha District Legal Services Authority created awareness by promoting the NALSA helpline number and distributing legal pamphlets in English, Nagamese, and Lotha (local dialect) to the general public through Panel Lawyers and Para Legal Volunteers.

The Peren District Legal Services Authority commemorated the day by conducting a one-day training program for Para Legal Volunteers under the Peren District, with guest resource persons from the Dimapur District Legal Services Authority. During the first session, Kumchuba, Panel Lawyer from DLSA Dimapur, explained the concept of PLVs under the Legal Services Act, the principles governing a PLV, and the importance of maintaining the Daily Activity Register. He also shared success stories of PLVs from Dimapur to motivate the PLVs in Peren District. Rokovitsu Khate, Panel Lawyer from DLSA Dimapur, spoke about customary laws in Nagaland and the constitutional mandate under Article 371A of the Indian Constitution, discussing various customary practices in the state. The program was attended by PLVs from Athibung, Tening, Peren, and Jalukie circles in the Peren District.
