Nagaland’s Department of Health and Family Welfare, led by Minister Paiwang Konyak, has initiated a phase-wise inspection of district hospitals across the state, starting with Dimapur on November 19. According to Konyak, the inspections are part of the department’s exercise and also as per directives from the central ministry.
The minister announced that Phase I of the inspection will begin tomorrow, covering Mokokchung, Longleng, Tuensang, and Mon. Subsequent districts will be inspected in Phases II and III.
Konyak stated that the purpose of the inspection is to assess infrastructure development, amenities, and the progress of ongoing projects. “We will ensure that infrastructure is completed, new facilities are functional, and critical issues like manpower shortages are addressed,” he said.
Acknowledging the acute shortage of doctors in the state, Konyak emphasized the need to concentrate specialist doctors in district headquarters to ensure equitable distribution of healthcare services. “We will also check whether medical equipment is adequate and whether funds are being utilized judiciously,” he added.
The minister highlighted the importance of the Non-Practicing Allowance (NPA) to encourage doctors to prioritize serving in district hospitals over private healthcare institutions.
In addition to healthcare infrastructure, Konyak revealed that the department will focus on food safety measures. “We will inspect food items to ensure they are free from harmful chemicals, have valid expiry dates, and adhere to proper manufacturing standards,” he stated. He also added that the inspection will also be done on fishes and vegetables to ensure that they are free from chemical contamination.
Konyak also mentioned that the department will conduct a drive to inspect pharmacies, emphasizing the requirement for licensed pharmacists to be present at drugstores. He added that the initiative will focus on identifying illegal drug substances, checking expiration dates, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
