Following the Mokokchung Municipal Council’s (MMC) recent announcement that it will no longer host the annual “Midnight Service” traditionally held on December 31, concerned citizens have stepped up to ensure the event continues. The MMC explained that this decision was made after “thorough discussion” among its members, citing growing responsibilities and shifting priorities. However, the council clarified that it would “not restrict any organization or party that comes forward to initiate, organize, or host such an event or program.”
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, the MMC noted, “With the changing time and growing responsibilities of the municipality, the MMC has come to the above-mentioned resolution.” The council also appealed to the public to support its decision, urging the community to “kindly stand by the decision and render their unfaltering support.”
Despite this, the tradition of the Midnight Service, deeply rooted in Mokokchung’s history, will be upheld by a group of concerned citizens. Speaking to MT, convener of the organizers of the New Year’s Eve 2024 celebration, Alem Longkumer, confirmed that they have received permission from the district administration to organize the event.
The organizers, a group called ‘Mokokchung Centric,’ are also reported to have sought the cooperation of the Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung, as well as the All Ward Union Mokokchung Town for security and the smooth conduct of the event.
The Midnight Service, first organized in 1972 by the Seasonal Club with the blessings of the Mokokchung Town Baptist Church, has become a cherished tradition in the town. Held annually at Police Point, the town square, it marks the transition to the New Year, bringing the community together in celebration. Over the years, the event has grown into an integral part of Mokokchung’s festive season, with many residents considering the festivities incomplete without it.
Similar challenges arose in 2022, when the event faced cancellation due to funding issues. At that time, the same concerned citizens rallied to save the celebration, with the Adventure and Motorsport Association Mokokchung (AMAM) stepping in to organize it in 2023.
Speaking to MT about the event’s future sustainability, Longkumer hinted at plans to ensure its continuity, describing the celebration as a vital tradition for Mokokchung, adding that the event is dear to the citizens of Mokokchung, a tradition that must continue.
The organizers have called for voluntary contributions to support the event and preserve this intangible heritage of Mokokchung. Donations can be made via GPay to 9436606996.
