The recent meeting between India and Myanmar’s commerce ministers on the need to resume border trade through roads is a notable development, particularly for the northeast India region. This compliments the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project connecting the seaport of Kolkata with Sittwe seaport in Rakhine State, Myanmar by sea, a part of India’s Act East Policy.
Interestingly, this aligns seamlessly with a vision shared over a decade ago in Mokokchung. Alemtemshi Jamir, the then Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner of Nagaland, during his address at the Silver Jubilee celebration of the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 2012, highlighted Mokokchung’s geographical advantage. With road networks connecting Upper Assam to Myanmar through Mokokchung, the town is poised to become a pivotal transit point, he shared. Now, as the India-Myanmar corridor gains traction, Mokokchung could serve as a logistical and commercial hub for goods flowing between the two nations.
Mokokchung can leverage its strategic location to become a critical link between Northeast India and Southeast Asia. Mokokchung’s proximity to Assam enhances its potential as a gateway for cross-border trade. By investing in infrastructure such as storage facilities, transportation systems, and trade-specific industries, Mokokchung can attract business from surrounding districts like Tuensang, Wokha, and Zunheboto. Additionally, the newly launched Rupee-Kyat Trade Settlement Mechanism presents a unique opportunity for local businesses to engage in cross-border transactions with fewer financial barriers.
However, realizing this vision requires a shift in mindset and proactive planning. Local entrepreneurs must recognize the value of reinvesting within Mokokchung, while policymakers should prioritize infrastructure improvements and bilateral trade agreements. With its strategic position and historical trade aspirations, Mokokchung can transform into a vital economic corridor. Imagine Mokokchung’s place on the map as a thriving center of trade and commerce.
